I was standing in line like a prole this morning waiting for my morning coffee, and, being the socially aware, proactive citizen that I am, my mind naturally drifted to further ways I could flag the ailing economy, and continue my series of blog posts for yet another interminable entry.
Just then, some middle aged businessman in a cheap suit, reeking of Brut, shoves past me and hands the barista his X Cafe Loyalty Card to be stamped. I glance back at the line behind me, and fully three quarters of the tired, bleary eyed commuters had similar cards in hand.
Now, I don’t know when we suddenly became America, with their love for loyalty cards and store plastic with awards programs, but I took affront to this.

America - Land of the Free(bie)
The coffee is good. Currently they serve Campos, which originated in Newtown, Sydney. If you don’t burn the coffee when you brew it (and these guys generally don’t) then it’s pretty decent. If it starts to suck, then I will go elsewhere. Indeed, I have done so on several occasions – including this place, which left a bad taste in my mouth (literally) when they burned the first coffee I ever had from there.
Are you that devoid of taste that you need the incentive of a loyalty card to frequent a cafe? Don’t you think the coffee is worth the $2.60 you shell out over the counter?

There's no such thing as a Free Lunch
And, most importantly, don’t you all feel like a fucking tool lining up and having your cards stamped like we live in communist Russia or something?
Well I got news for ya – you look like tools.
If I get offered a loyalty card at a cafe or restaurant, I look the barista in the eye and tell him that I will keep coming here provided they don’t burn the coffee. I would say that is worth more to me than an free coffee every two weeks, wouldn’t you say?

Id' rather it didn't suck than I got a free one every 2 weeks

Dude.. seriously scary. As you were writing this, I was out getting my coffee.. and pretty much noticed the exact same thing as you write above. The manager I went with, pulled out his card.. and I realised that everyone else had cards too.. I looked at the pile to consider whether I should get one, and realised nah.. They deserve my $2.50 a day.. they make AWESOME coffee and have the best service i’ve seen.. I’m not gunna be one of those people.
